The ELSA reaction wall at JRC Ispra tests full-scale structures for seismic safety assessment using pseudo-dynamic methods.
The European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) operates a reaction wall 16 metres tall and 21 metres long, with two reaction platforms totalling 760 square metres that hold real-scale specimens on both sides of the wall. Computer-controlled hydraulic actuators apply strong dynamic forces to full-scale structures and control the resulting movements with high precision.
The facility's continuous pseudo-dynamic test method simulates earthquake loading in extreme slow motion, so progressive damage and structural deformations can be observed and recorded. Research programmes at ELSA have covered reinforced concrete buildings, bridges with isolation systems, seismic retrofitting of frames, and steel composite structures, and the laboratory gives researchers from Europe and beyond transnational access under European research frameworks.
