CARLA is an open-source simulator built to support the development, training and validation of autonomous driving systems. It runs as a scalable client-server application on Unreal Engine, defines road networks in the ASAM OpenDRIVE format, and exposes Python and C++ APIs so autonomy software can configure sensor suites, drive simulated vehicles and read camera, lidar, depth, radar and GPS data.
The simulator is distributed free of charge under the MIT licence from its public repository, with packaged releases, a Python wheel and container images, and it is co-hosted by the Computer Vision Center in Barcelona and the Embodied AI Foundation in California. Around it the CARLA team offers consortium membership, custom software development, premium support and consulting, while its challenge leaderboards and scenario-execution tooling are used to benchmark driving systems.
