AirSim is a cross-platform, open-source simulator for drones, cars and other vehicles, distributed as a plugin for Unreal Engine with an experimental Unity release. It renders realistic environments and exposes remote-procedure-call APIs in C++, Python, C# and Java so autonomy software can read camera, depth and lidar data and command simulated vehicles. It supports software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop operation with flight controllers including PX4 and ArduPilot and a computer-vision mode for capturing depth, disparity and segmentation images.
Microsoft Research created AirSim in 2017 and released it under the MIT licence, with precompiled environments and build-from-source instructions for Windows and Linux; the final published release was version 1.8.1 in July 2022. Microsoft states that no further updates will be made and archived AirSim in favour of Project AirSim, its successor platform for aerial autonomy, while the original source code and documentation remain publicly accessible.
