The Robot Operating System is an open-source middleware framework for building robot applications.
The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a set of open-source software libraries and tools that developers use to build robot applications, spanning hardware drivers, message passing between processes, common robot functionality, and developer tooling. Although its name evokes an operating system, ROS functions as a middleware layer above the host operating system, providing hardware abstraction and a modular architecture in which distributed programs cooperate as a graph of communicating nodes.
ROS is stewarded by Open Robotics and the Open Source Robotics Foundation, which maintain its reference distributions, build infrastructure, documentation, and community programs, and which distribute it under a permissive open-source license. The framework anchors a large research and industrial robotics ecosystem, and it interoperates with the same organization's other platforms, including Gazebo for simulation, ros-controls for real-time control, and Open-RMF for multi-fleet interoperability.
