Microsoft Project AirSim was announced in 2022 as the successor to AirSim, the open-source aerial robotics simulation platform Microsoft Research released in 2017. It provided an end-to-end environment for developing, training, and testing autonomous aircraft, pairing high-fidelity physics and sensor simulation with pre-trained models and tooling that reduced the custom code required to stand up an autonomy program.
The platform ran on Microsoft Azure and used Unreal Engine for photorealistic rendering, and it supported an early access program through which aerospace developers evaluated the software. Project AirSim was released under the MIT license as part of a DARPA-supported initiative, but Microsoft discontinued it in late 2023 before general availability and archived the original AirSim repository; the open-source codebase is now maintained by IAMAI.

Microsoft Project AirSim was Microsoft's aerial autonomy simulation platform, succeeding the open-source AirSim research project.
